Reading Notes Mahabharata PDE part A

Starting off the Mahabharta we are introduced to Vyasa who is the author of the entire thing and about how he had declared that there was not one man on earth who was worthy enough to write down this story. Vyasa also arranged the Vedas which is the story about all things that man must know. Because no one was worthy the god Brahma appeared and declared that Ganesha, another god would be his scribe and his pen was not allowed to stop for a single moment.

We now are moving into the story. Tells of two children being born in a fish because King Uaricha’s semen fell into a river. There was one boy who came to live with him and a girl who was left to be raised by the fisherman’s wife who found them.

Now moving on to King Shantanu who married a goddess on the condition that he shall never speak harshly to her. To test him she throws their firstborn son into a river killing him and proceeded to do so with the next 6 babies they had and was going to do the same to the 8th when the king broke his promise and reared her. In doing so she was no longer his and vanished with the eighth child right in front of his very eyes. The child was later brought back to him and was a very noble son named Devavrata.

As king Shantanu became older he sought to marry again and the young, beautiful women he wished to wed was Satyavati who was the daughter born of a fish earlier in the reading. This woman was also the mother of Vyasa. Satyavati is like the virgin Mary in this aspect. In order to marry her, Vyasa had to become the heir to his throne which was something the king was unwilling to do and left.
