Reading Notes, Ramayana Part B
For the second part of the reading for this week we start off with Baharta coming back home only to find his father, Dasharatha dead and his brother Rama exiled. Baharta's mother is Keikeyi is the on who instigated Rama's exile so that Baharta can become king. Baharta grieves when he finds out what had happened to his brother and father and vows to never sit on the throne after the deed his mother done. Next came the funeral for Dasharatha and even the sky is sad with his loss and the people mourn for ten days. After the funeral Baharta goes into the forest in search of Rama to persuade him to return home and take the throne. When being persuaded to come back Rama argues that a good man must honor the wishes of even the deceased and decides tho remain in the jungle for the fourteen years Dasharatha commanded him to. So that part of Rama can be at the throne Baharta takes his sandals so that the memory of Rama will be with him. The sandals of Rama becam the symbol of royal authority. In the forest Sita is taken by a rakshasa who goes by the name Viradha. Rama and Lackshmana and defeated Viradha who was cursed and once was slain by Rama would retain his true form and arise into heaven. Ravana who Rama has set out to defeat has a sister who is named Shurpanakha who falls in love with Rama but that love is not returned and Rama jests that she go try and seduce his own brother Lackshmana. Angry at the jest she trys to kill Sita to drink her life blood and is attacked by Lackshmana who cuts off her ear. Demons are sent to kill them and Rama sends Sita and Lackshmana off to a cave so Sita can remain safe and Rama fight the demons alone.
