Reading Notes: Sita Sings the Blues

In the film Sita Sings the Blues we are being retold the Ramayana from last week’s reading, but with a different twist. It is being retold in modern times with the setting taking place in San Francisco. Then moves to the family tree with Dasharatha having 3 wives and four sons, but leaves out the sacrifice of how he received his sons and instead moves forward to Rama becoming banished because of one of his other wives forcing Dasharatha to do so that her son could become king. Then Sita forces her way into going into the forest with Rama for his fourteen-year banishment. It then shows Rama using Vishnu’s bow to kill rackshasas in the forest with Sita by his side. Then it cuts back to modern day with the character catching his flight to India. Back to the story from the past we are being told about Ravana and it is saying that the only thing he ever did wrong was kidnap Sita. Then it shows the argument with Ravana and his council on whether or not to take revenge on Rama and Ravana’s sister tricking him into kidnapping SIta to become one of his wives. To do this one of his council morphs into a golden deer to trick Rama and Ravana will kidnap Sita when she is not protected. The movie does a good job of portraying the characters, it shows Ravana with the 14 heads he is told to have in the reading. Ravana’s plan here does work leading to the capture of Sita and also leads to his demise. They then say that Sita drops here jewelry to leave a trail which it different from the reading we had. It is also mentioned that Hanuman is born as reincarnation of Shiva whose purpose is to help Rama in his quest. Then it cuts back to the modern day where the main character is staying in India for another month.
