Week 10 Reading Notes: Cradle Tales of Hinduism

Starting with the reading, Cradle tales of Hinduism written by Sister Nivedita. We start with the story of Krishna’s birth. The tyrant Kansa who was extremely had great love for his sister Devaki and his noble, Vasudeva. He worked to arrange a marriage between the two. After the wedding he acted as the charioteer to drive them home. On his way a voice from heaven spoke and told Kansa that the eighth child of the couple will slay him at 12 years’ old. To save himself Kansa imprisoned both of them underneath his palace. When the couple had a child he slayed it and did so the first 7 times. Now the 8th child was coming, which meant the king’s time on earth was starting to come to an end. This child was Krishna.

Moving to Krishna’s childhood, Kansa had been told that Krishna was living somewhere in the dominions of Mathura. His solution was to have any newborn child murdered so that maybe one of these children would be Krishna. A vampire nurse who was one of Kansa’s demons was sent and found Krishna. Disguised as anyone but who she really was she help him in her arms. She began to breastfeed to take away his life. Instead of him dying, the demon’s life was sucked out of her and she died. When word of this reached Kansa he became sure that this was the child destined to kill him. Another demon came and was going to crush him with a cart, however Krishna could not be fooled and gave a kick which sent the cart flying and killed the demon.
