Week 10 Reading Notes: Cradle Tales of Hinduism Part B

Now as we return, Krishna is approaching the age of 12. As the heavens had spoken, this was coming to the time when he would slay the tyrant Kansa. All of Kansa’s attempts on Krishna’s life had failed, along with that Krishna had humbled Indra and swallowed a forest fire just to name a few of his great feats. A great sacrifice was planned to be made in Mathura. Kansa was there as well as Krishna and his adopted family. Kansa was fearful and had begun to have nightmares dreaming of the moment when Krishna would end his tyranny. He spoke about it, but people thought it was joke. Only Kansa knew that he would not be alive much longer. While Kansa was making the final preparations Krishna and his brother rose that morning and gave worship and were now on their way to the tournament. When the elephant that Kansa had hidden came out, Krishna dragged the mighty creature by its tail. After wrestling with it he was able to kill the elephant. Now in the arena Krishna and his brother were to combat some of the king’s men for the tournament. As more and more of his men were slain Kansa became fearful, because he knew that his time on earth was coming to an end. As a last resort he had them fight all of the remaining gladiators. Kansa then gave an order for the boys to be arrested and slain along with all the people that were with them.
