Week 7 story

Here is the link to the updated version of this story. Link

Years ago before our golf team became dominant we were considered the laughing stock of the big 12. For a school that thrives on excellence this type of failure was unacceptable and changes had to be made to bring the program back around to how it was in its glory days.

To do this a young man from Georgia was hired to come coach this once great team and had a very daunting task ahead of him if he wanted to be able to maintain a long career here. For him to be able to have all the necessary skills to thrive in this field he must go into the backwoods of Georgia to fast and pray so that he may become the best coach in the country. While out on his journey he had fasted enough to where the only nutrition that he needed to survive was the fresh morning air that came with the fog in the morning.

After a while he stumbled on to an old run down course that was hidden in the woods that looked like it had been abandoned years ago. As a former collegiate golfer who was one of the best in the world he decided to stop and relive his glory years. By taking a fallen branch from a pine tree he fashioned a golf club and took a pine cone that he griped so tightly in his hands that it compressed in to a perfectly smooth sphere that he could hit shots with. After making his equipment he walked over to the green and started chipping, but just as he got there a ball flew right by his head. Angered because there had been no one else out there, they got into an argument and as soon as he got close enough it became apparent that his adversary was a god, because of the energy flowing out of him. The young man kneeled down and presented his club and ball as a gift which pleased the god. Then and there he was given the ability to turn our program around by the god adding the little extra bit of fire in his belly. Now we are known as one of the best teams in the country and he is the best coach in the country.

Authors Note: I took the story of Arjuna and Shiva. Where Arjuna went into the mountains to fast and pray. SO that he may be given the ability to defeat his enemies. I adjusted it to when our coach came here that he had to go fast and pray in the woods to be given the ability to turn our program around.

  2. Hi Riley! I loved the way you put a modern and OU-based spin on this particular chapter. The preface was an effective attention getter- especially the "before our golf team became dominant we were the laughingstock of the Big 12". The origin story of you guys' stellar coach was great, especially the go-off-into-the-woods to become great. The part he crushed a pine cone in his bare hands was iconic, and the ending was perfect. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Hi Riley!

I just read your story, and I really liked it. It is very original, and unique. I was wondering if you could make a title for it. Something catchy that would grab the readers attention, and provide a little clue as to what the story is about. What god did the coach meet? Overall, I enjoyed your story.

  4. Hi Riley, I really liked your story! It was definitely a cool little version of the golf story. I was intrigued at the part where he carved a golf club from a pine tree. I am sure there must be real skill for that. It is neat that it explains how the program turned around or at least your version of it!

  5. Hi Riley!
As I was reading your story, I was interested to see where you would go with the golf theme! Its great that you were able to put your passion into a story and tie it to Indian Epics as well! I enjoyed the story and thought you did great at describing why he was in the woods and how he made his equipment! Good job!
