Week 12 reading notes, Ramayana A

With this retelling of the story of Rama we start off with King Dasaratha pacing along his balcony just looking all around him at the people in his city. This day he was unable to find joy in any of the things that usually excited the King. His three wives all noticed how anxious he was and did their best to try and console him. There was an assembly in which the king would speak and people from all walks of life who lived in the city were present for this. He was hurt that throughout all the years to have been on this earth, he had not been granted one son to continue his lineage. He knew that his time was coming to end and so desperately wanted a son to carry on his great legacy. It was proposed that he should sacrifice a horse in hopes of pleasing Vishnu and all the other gods so that King Dasaratha would be granted a son from them. For this to work Vishnu had to be pleased since he was the god of the gods. In preparation for this sacrifice he and his wives prayed to the gods and Vishnu that the sacrifice would be successful. The horse selected for this sacrifice was a purebred who had no blemishes of any whatsoever. It was let loosed and followed by 400 generals to protect. Whoever the horse came across was also required to be present for the sacrifice. After 1 year the horsecame back and the sacrifice was about to begin.
